thinking on a thursday...

our dear little squish decided that she didn't want to go back to sleep after her 4 am feeding... as all mommies know, just because baby sleeps x number of hours between feedings at night doesn't mean mommy gets the same number of hours of sleep- having said that, i know i can't really complain because it could be worse, but a total of about 5 hours (broken up) just ain't cutting it anymore.i think i can count on one hand the number of GOOD nights i've gotten in the last year. about the time madison FINALLY went back to sleep this morning, cole was up. grrrr. maybe i'm not handling this as well as i should, but at least i'm honest enough to admit it.
anyway... sounds like kelvin will probably be going to tulsa, oklahoma for work for 4 weeks, maybe a little more. the money's decent and it's work, so whatever he decides to do, i'm behind him. he said something about doing his mandatory (for this particular job) drug test tomorrow, so it sounds like a pretty sure thing. of course, the kids and i will be staying here, since it's a shorter job. i remember driving past tulsa on the way to arizona; we stopped at one of the sonics there for lunch and the thought crossed my mind, "huh. i wonder if my favorite band members ever ate at this exact sonic, since they're from tulsa"... that would be hanson, in case you're wondering.

don't be fooled- this little look usually means mischief. good thing it's adorable!

now, why can't she do this at 4 am???
quick question for all you experienced moms out there- let's say, hypothetically, you're toddler (say, about 18 months or so) has this horrible habit of letting out ear-piercing screams when he or she gets mad or frustrated? and let's just say you've tried everything from ignoring it to screaming back to time-outs, even a swat on the behind and NOTHING resolves the behavior problem? what would you do? ok, this isn't really hypothetical, it's happening in our house. i'm at my wits' end with this- it's been going on for a LONG time and nothing we do seems to make any difference. i hate to resort to spanking him every time because it hurts me too much to do it, so i'm curious as to if anyone else has dealt with this particular issue before... and what you've done to resolve it. he's such a sweet kid except for this particular issue...!

Sorry Lindsay...the squealing thing is quite normal! Haven't found anything that works...they know it's naughty but they do it anyway, because in the heat of the moment, it's the only way they can release their frustration. It won't last forever....

good to know it won't last forever, but it's been almost a year since he started this "phase"... thanks for the input!

It tends to be a phase some go thru - we didn't have it too bad (yet)
Discipline seems to VARY so much from parent to parent and can be a touchy subject.
The main thing in whatever your dealing with is to be CONSISTANT. It can be hard and tiring.. but once you start something, carry through with it until its over. (When our kids screamed -from anger- I'd 'flick' their mouth and tell them, 'NO! thats too loud/ thats naughty, etc.) Ever kid is different, even amongst our 4 kids, not everything works the same way.
Good luck!

I agree, consistency is key. We used a tap on the mouth along with a firm voice saying "no screaming", each time & it didn't last long before he figured it out. It doesn't have to hurt, but hurt their feelings a little & realize mommy's serious.
